Al-Jazeera reporters await Egypt retrial verdict
Peter Greste is nervously awaiting an Egyptian court’s verdict on terrorism-related charges.
An Egyptian court is reported to have adjourned the long-running retrial of three Al Jazeera journalists for the ninth time.
The reporter was deported by Egypt in February, after 400 days behind bars.
A verdict is expected overnight for a Canadian journalist on trial in Egypt on widely-denounced terror charges.
Egyptian authorities have detained Baher Mohammed, Peter Greste and Mohammed Fahmy after they were convicted of spreading inaccurate news and endorsing the outlawed Muslim brotherhood.
He and his two Al Jazeera colleagues had been serving seven to 10-year sentences for aiding a terrorist group.
Their retrial had been ordered by an appeals court which said the initial verdict lacked evidence against the three journalists working for the Doha-based network’s English-speaking channel.
The respected foreign correspondent says he’s nervous about the outcome because a bad result could spell the end of his career.
‘But I’m still deeply concerned about the prospect of a conviction.’.
Mr Greste was deported before the retrial began and it has been conducted in his absence.
The three men have received support from governments, media organisations and rights groups from around the world.
