Alabama Fans Sing ‘Rammer Jammer’ After Iron Bowl Win
It’s Alabama-Auburn. It’s the Iron Bowl.
The Gamecocks (6-6) were little more than a speed bump on that road that Clemson got past quickly, jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the opening quarter and cruising to a third straight win in the Palmetto State’s biggest sporting event.
With Florida also losing Saturday at No. 14 Florida State and the next-highest-ranked team, Tennessee, upset by Vanderbilt, that leaves Auburn as the odds-on favorite to play at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on January 2. After the Tigers couldn’t move, placekicker Daniel Carlson booted his first field goal, a 42-yarder for a 3-0 AU lead. Without accounting for those stipulations, the game was actually Alabama’s 1,266th football game. Three plays later on third-and12, Hurts called his own number and busted up the middle for 17 yards and the first down. Fortunately, the defense held yet again and Auburn settled for it’s second field goal. I believe in everyone’s ability and everyone’s got to do their job. The Tide methodically drove down the field and capped off the drive with a 2 yard Jalen Hurts touchdown run around right end. That’s a big plus against Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, who averages 73.3 rushing yards per game, is second on the team with 803 net rushing yards and leads the team with 11 rushing touchdowns. Nickel back Tony Brown was ejected for targeting in the first quarter and cornerback Marlon Humphrey missed part of the second half with an unspecified injury. Auburn finally managed a first down before settling for their third field goal. Worth ran 15 times for 107 yards and three touchdowns, increasing his FBS-leading total to 25 rushing scores while playing only three quarters. Including his four kicks Saturday night, Carlson has made 26 on the year, which are the fourth-most in SEC history.
Carlson was true from 39 yards late in the second quarter, cutting the Tigers deficit to 10-9 with 3:30 left in the first half. “I’m certainly happy for our supporters, our fans and the people who support The University of Alabama that they can be happy about the victory we had today”, Alabama head coach Nick Saban said.
“We turned it around on offense and really dominated the game in terms of time of possession. We play one play at a time, and we try to prepare our guys the best we can to go out there and play well”.
Alabama’s passing game got off to a red hot start. Bama added the PAT to take a 20-9 lead. He completed 27-of-36 mostly short and mid-range passes and threw for two touchdowns. Entering the matchup No. 5 in the nation in rushing yards per game, the Tigers’ fast-paced offense was stymied by an overwhelming group on the opposite side of the ball. His favorite target, ArDarius Stewart, returned from missing the last game for disciplinary reasons to catch 10 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown.
On its ensuing drive, Alabama pushed down the field and made it to the red zone before tying the score at 3 on a 29-yard field goal with 5:40 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers and LSU finished tied for second in the SEC West behind Alabama.
The Iron Bowl, one of college football’s most heated rivalries, was pretty one-sided on Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.
