Alabama Senator: ‘A lot’ of changes could come to healthcare bill
However, in the Senate, where the Republican majority is narrow, law and policy makers are expected to subject the new bill for further scrutiny. Senator Tom Cotton–who wants to see Obamacare repealed–said back in March that they shouldn’t have “release [d] a bill that was written in secret and expect to pass it in 18 days”.
McConnell dislikes surprises and drama.
In this May 4, 2017, photo, President Donald Trump talks to House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis.in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, after the House pushed through a health care bill.
“For the House leadership to proceed to a vote without an estimate, they are essentially arguing that the bill is so much like the previous one they don’t need an estimate, and yet, it is so much different that many more people should vote for it”, Elmendorf also told Politico. Republicans control the chamber 52-48.
Cutting almost $1 trillion from Medicaid will give states the freedom to tailor the program to suit their needs, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said Sunday, as he defended a narrowly passed House bill that aims to undo parts of the health care law enacted by the previous administration. So Republicans are using a special process preventing a Democratic filibuster that would require 60 votes to end. That means he can afford to lose just two senators; Vice President Mike Pence would vote to break a 50-50 tie in his constitutional role as vice president of the Senate.
“I think I know the gospel pretty well”, she also said, “and I’d say the CBO is not the gospel”.
Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Mike Enzi, R-Idaho, and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chair pivotal committees.
Major medical and other groups, including the American Medical Association, opposed the House bill. Gardner chairs the Senate GOP’s campaign committee.
That, however, would only shift the burden of costs for people on the federal Medicaid rolls elsewhere – or leave those people without insurance entirely, Thomas said.
Democrats and liberal activists have lambasted McConnell for appointing a group with no female members. “Obviously it’s going to get more relaxed as it relates to the Medicaid expansion”. More and more doctors are refusing to even accept people with Medicaid. We will not see premiums come down for everyone.
“Health care affects everyone in this country and we need to try to get it right”. He said “considerably more work” was needed to lower premiums.
Of course such a “provision” is not out of the realm of possibility with insurance industry shills, patriarchs, misogynists and anti-women evangelicals that make up the Republicans in Congress, but it is simply not in the GOP’S healthcare legislation. The reality is that unless we address rising costs, the insurance market will continue to worsen for families, in terms of both access and affordability. Some senators have already made clear that they intend to make major changes to the bill, which passed Thursday. The Senate could override that with 60 votes. We’re stepping in front of it and rescuing people from a collapsing system.
Could the Senate still take a bipartisan approach to health care?
The American Action Network, a political non-profit aligned with House Speaker Ryan (R-WI), has reserved $500,000 of airtime for a TV commercial to air nationally and in Ryan’s district, McClatchy reported.
“I think what’s happening is not dead on arrival”, he said, suggesting the Senate will look at the House version, then “come up with what the Senate thinks the Senate can do”.
Here’s hoping you didn’t spend your weekend reading or watching coverage of the health bill passed by the Republican House last week.
