Aladdin Coming to Australia
Adapted from the 1992 Disney animated film, Aladdin is the story of a street urchin who uses the help of a magic Genie to win the heart of Princess Jasmine.
Aladdin has been making its way around the globe and will hit Sydney next August.
“The idea is so filmic and they didn’t know how to get into it”, Schumacher said.
Disney Theatrical Productions president Thomas Schumacher said Sydney had been chosen as part of the show’s global growth as it was a “world theatre capital” and the company had scored so much success here with previous productions of Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins and The Lion King.
Fans of the film will be pleased to hear that the stage musical features a few of its most popular songs including Friend Like Me, One Jump Ahead, Prince Ali, and, arguably most importantly, A Whole New World.
The New South Wales Government, through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, is the partner of the Disney box office smash.
“Aladdin really started with Howard Ashman and Alan Menken”, Clements said.
“Disney Theatrical has a long and successful history of producing first-rate musical theatre productions here in Australia and we are thrilled to announce that Sydney’s magnificent Capitol Theatre will be the venue for the Australian premiere of this huge Broadway hit”. With lyrics from Olivier Award and two-time Oscar® winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony and Olivier Award, three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida), and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), and a book by Beguelin, Aladdin is directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon).
Brad Kane and Lea Salonga, the voices that made Aladdin and Jasmine serenade each other so effortlessly to each other, came on the show and wooed audiences again after 23 years.
We would take a re-release of Aladdin every year if it meant getting more of these reunions.
“Then I go home and feed the cows and that just brings me way back down to earth!”
