‘Aladdin’ digital release includes never-before-seen footage of Robin Williams
On Thursday’s Good Morning America, the cast and creators of the Arabian tale sat down to share memories of the Oscar victor and his part in the movie’s long-lasting impact!
Lucky for us, those someones were Brad Kane and Lea Salonga, the original singing voices of Aladdin and Jasmine. The archived footage shows Williams in the recording booth bringing the Genie to life with his improvisational skills and impressions, many of which didn’t make the final cut.
Oh, they had a little bit of help as famous Disney composer Alan Menken was there with his piano and played the music.
Williams committed suicide a year ago at age 63 following a longtime battle with depression. “It was awesome working with Robin, absolutely incredible”, he said on Friday. Musker spoke on GMA about their lost friend and said, “He was the Genie…he was bigger than life”.
On Friday, Good Morning America aired a peek at a few of these never-before-seen outtakes, which will be included on a new home-video re-release of Aladdin due next week. We were totally walking down the plank. “If he said no, we were in big trouble because the whole concept was built around Robin”.
“Fortunately he agreed to do it, and he worked so hard”, Clements recalled.
“There was nobody else that could be the Genie”, Clements noted. “We recorded him in four-hour sessions and he would be going for four hours straight”, he gushed. By the end, he was just drenched in sweat.
“Aladdin” was released last week on digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere. “He would have so much energy and so much passion”.
