ALERTS Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announces Kirk Cousins will start at
Even though Kirk Cousins is ahead of him on the depth chart now, head coach Jay Gruden denied the team is shopping the former No. 2 overall pick.
Robert Griffin III’s time as the Redskins starting quarterback is up, but he might not be able to escape the nation’s capital.
There was question about whether the team had taken proper measures after Griffin was cleared to play in Saturday’s game against the Ravens, but was then ruled not ready to resume contact play a day later.
For Griffin, that means the game vs. Detroit might have been his last at FedEx Field.
The NFL Mocks crew got together and talked about some of the places Griffin might end up if the Redskins do decide to release him. “He has really opened our eyes”, Gruden said. “My wife would tell you that I was a bear to deal with”. “There’s something powerful about feeling believed in, and something powerful about knowing where you stand”.
The quarterback – appearing at the team’s annual Welcome Home Luncheon – spoke for the first time since being benched in favor of Kirk Cousins. I anticipate Kirk taking this job and running with it. The door is not shut on Robert Griffin.
“I have nothing against Robert”, Gruden said. “I like Robert as a quarterback…. I anticipate us having a competition at a lot of spots, and quarterback is no different next year”.
The start of the NFL season is just over a week away and one of the stars of the league is making all the headlines despite not featuring in the opening week. We didn’t want to, but we had to. The Redskins are liking what they see from the rookie, but Morris is fighting for a new contract and does not want to fall the same way Griffin did.
Nothing about the way Griffin’s demotion has been handled, from his does-he-or-doesn’t-he-have-a-concussion to the timing to Cousins being declared starter for the year screams buttoned-up-military-operation. Griffin defended himself in a back-and-forth with a fan that never turned nasty but did amplify views on Griffin’s use of social media.
