Alex Ovechkin Scores 500th Career Goal
Alex Ovechkin now has 500 goals, and 433 assists for 933 career regular season points in 800 games.
Alexander Ovechkin became the 43rd player in National Hockey League history to reach 500 goals in his career with a power play goal against Senators on Sunday.
His first goal gave the Capitals a 5-1 lead after two periods and he stepped into the spotlight again midway through the third period, beating Hammond with a mad dash to the net at the 9:46 mark.
Ovechkin was mobbed by teammates, got an extended standing ovation and took a skate around the rink, acknowledging the cheering crowd that included his parents.
Ovechkin reached 500 in his 801 career game, the fifth quickest in league history behind Wayne Gretzky (575), Mario Lemieux (605), Mike Bossy (647) and Brett Hull (693). He also became the first Russian to ever score 500 goals, having passed Sergei Fedorov for most goals by a Russian-born player earlier in the season.
Petr Mrazek stopped 30 shots to earn his fourth consecutive win for the Red Wings, who now have their longest winning streak of the season: four games.
EDMONTON, Alberta – Jaromir Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau scored in the first period, Al Montoya made 24 saves and Florida beat Edmonton to extend its franchise-record winning streak to 12 games.
Merrill broke the tie 6:26 into the third and goaltender Corey Schneider made 10 saves in the final period. Zach Parise had the only goal for Minnesota, scoring for the first time against his former team.
Playing on arguably the best Washington Capitals team of his tenure in 2015-16, Alex Ovechkin hopes to soon add one of the few things missing from his resume, a Stanley Cup Championship.
The Washington Capitals played a tribute video for their captain after he scored his 500th goal. With Ovechkin are T.J. Oshie (77), Nicklas Backstrom (19), Karl Alzner (27) and Matt Niskanen (2).
“It was a special moment”, Ovechkin said during a press conference after the game.
