Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria in same WCup qualifying group
Bafana Bafana are placed in Group D as the African qualifiers were drawn together on Friday from which the winners go to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.
The Eagles have played in six World Cup tournaments and made it to the knockout stage on three occasions.
Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria have all been drawn in the same qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup. Christian Gourcuff quit his job with Algeria this month and Nigeria fired Sunday Oliseh when they were bundled out of the 2017 African Nations Cup qualifiers in March.
This was the outcome of the draw held at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt.
“If we prepare very well, we have a very young team that can qualify us from the group”, Chukwu said.
The Super Eagles qualified for the 1998 Fifa World Cup in France where they also reached the second round.
Cameroon, however, have a rich World Cup pedigree with seven finals appearances while both Algeria and Nigeria are both without a coach. They lost all three of their group games in South Africa in 2010 and in Brazil four years later.
Guedioura’s Algeria have been drawn in Group B with heavyweights Cameroon, Nigeria and 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winners Zambia in what has been tagged as the ‘Group of Death.’ And the Watford midfielder, writing on his Instagram page, admits as much.
In the other African Russia 2018 qualifying groups, Tunisia, Libya, DR Congo and Guinea face off in Group A; while Cote d’Ivoire, Morocco, Mali and Gabon are in Group C.
