Alisson completes Liverpool move in world-record deal
The transfer is a world record fee paid for a stopper and Liverpool fans will be praying the Brazilian solves their persistent goalkeeping issues.
When you consider that Buffon remained the World’s most expensive goalkeeper for 16 years, it tells you just how badly Juventus wanted to sign him from Parma way back at the turn of the century. According to reports, the breakdown is a $73 million fee plus $12 million in potential add-ons.
He flew out to Liverpool last night and completed his medical this morning.
Roma’s Alisson Becker reacts.
If Liverpool’s £75m outlay for a central defender came as a shock, their newly set record for a goalkeeper is truly stunning.
“I will say that a club never acts to damage itself, as every move is made to improve the team overall”.
Alisson comes highly rated from his time in the Italian top flight.
Speaking to his new club’s official website, the goalkeeper expressed his excitement at reuniting with former Roma teammate Mohamed Salah, while admitting he was influenced in part by the Reds’ 5-2 victory over the Giallorossi at Anfield last season.
“AS Roma can confirm that Alisson Becker has completed his move to Liverpool, in a deal that could be worth up to 72.5 million euros”, the Serie A club said on Twitter.
The 25-year-old was also Brazil’s No 1 for the World Cup, playing every minute of their campaign, which came to an end in the quarter-finals to Belgium. He went 31 straight pass attempts over those two-plus matches without a miss.
The manager is said to be “delighted” with the club’s summer signings, and “Klopp is also encouraged by the fact that the Reds have avoided a summer of uncertainty over any of their major stars”. We weighed up the pros and cons and chose to speak to Liverpool.
Liverpool’s 84 league goals was bettered only by City last season but defensive inconsistency cost them dear as they finished fourth in the league and were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
