Almandin Denies Heartbreak In Cup Thriller
Kerrin rode to victory on his horse Almandin, and broke the record with the longest amount of time ever recorded between Cup wins.
Winning isn’t everything – just ask Irishman Aidan Shiels, owner of racehorse Heartbreak City.
He said his three sons – Charlie (eight), Jake (six) and Reece (three) – knew the Melbourne Cup was on.
“Jeez, he traveled well”, McEvoy said from the saddle, having timed the 11-1 shot’s run to perfection.
Today they celebrate the Melbourne Cup victory by McEvoy, who rode Almandin home at Flemington.
McEvoy’s wife Cathy is the sister of Michelle Payne, who rode Prince of Penzance to victory here a year ago, becoming the first female jockey to win the race.
Williams other Cup winners were Just A Dash (1981) and What A Nuisance (1985). Lloyd had faith in me to get the job done, the horse had a dream run through.
Hickmott “has been with me for probably 15 years now”.
“There is no better person as an employee of a racing stable”.
“I tell you what they do, it is very similar to footballers, using the ACL comparison”. Anyway, he said “I’d better go” so it was good.
The last Cup victor he bought from colonial stock was Efficient, a Zabeel gelding who won in 2007. He did not race again until June of this year, and has won 3 of 6 starts in Australia in 2016. (Son) Nick and I would not be successful unless we had the team we’ve had.

Almandin gave Williams his fifth Melbourne Cup.
He had Almandin for company, as he had for the entirety of the race with McEvoy choosing to track Moreira in midfield and the two never more than a length apart, but with every 100 metres Heartbreak City’s head was still narrowly in front.
While Australians wagered more than $140 million on Tuesday’s Cup, Williams did not have a bet, channelling his money into buying horses like the victor Almandin from Europe.
“We came here, we finished second, we would’ve been happy with last”, Shiels continues, before embracing his fellow co-owners.
Williams is considering a distance change and possibly looking at set weights races like the Doomben Cup in May, saying the Australian Cup in March may come too soon.
