Als acquire veteran Glenn from Riders
The trade means that Glenn has now been associated with every CFL team in the league except for Edmonton. He has backed up and started in Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Calgary, Hamilton and B.C. In 2013, he was an expansion draft pick of Ottawa, yet never played a down for the Redblacks. That was the decision that we had to make.
With the 2-13 Roughriders in the midst of a one-week hiatus, and with the players dispersed across North America, the 36-year-old quarterback was dealt to the Montreal Alouettes on Wednesday – a few hours in advance of the CFL’s trade deadline – for a fifth-round draft pick in 2016.
During a year in which virtually everything went wrong, the decision by erstwhile general manager Brendan Taman to sign Glenn as a free agent in February turned out to be an inspired move.
The Roughriders were formally, mercifully, eliminated from playoff contention Friday when they lost 30-15 to the host Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Glenn, himself, was offering no promises on Wednesday, admitting himself how hard it is to be traded in the middle of a season.
The eyebrow-raiser was the mid-afternoon move of Messam to Calgary.
Messam is the CFL’s second-leading rusher with 826 yards on the ground this season and leads all backs with 1,280 yards from scrimmage. But now he is a member of the Stampeders, whose roster already includes a front-line national tailback named Jon Cornish. The Als are home to Hamilton on Sunday and it would be imperative to get Glenn into the fold at Olympic Stadium immediately to learn the offence. The 15th-year CFLer suffered a torn right pectoral muscle three quarters into Saskatchewan’s fifth regular-season game.
While the Als acquired Glenn to get them to the playoffs, and beyond, he denied any added pressure has been placed on him.
The two best offensive players on a last place team are no longer members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Looking ahead, the Roughriders would like to see whether Crapigna – a former McMaster Marauders standout who has yet to play for the Stampeders this season – can be the longterm placement specialist.
“Today was a good day”. He hasn’t been a guy who has been on the street.
“We’ve done a lot of homework and watched a lot of tape”. “We’ve been young at that position pretty much all year”. The interim GM said the team’s plans will become apparent after he meets with interim head coach Bob Dyce.
