Altercation between South Carolina student, school resource officer
A video first reported by WIS-TV in South Carolina shows what appears to be a school resource officer violently subduing a young black female student at Spring Valley High School in the state capital of Columbia. Fields then drags her out of the overturned desk, throws her across the room, and jumps on top of her while instructing her to put her hands behind her back. The incident took place between a school resource officer employed by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and a student.
The video shows Deputy Ben Fields, who has also been identified as the school’s football coach, approaching the unidentified student.
Officials had not released any further details about the incident.
The video was posted on Twitter originally by Shaun King on Monday afternoon and has thousands of views. She refused to do so and was then placed under arrest for refusing to leave the class.
Richland School District Two Superintendent Dr. Debbie Hamm issued a statement saying the district is “deeply concerned about the incident that occured at Spring Valley High School”.
We are working to learn what prompted the incident.
A South Carolina school district has banned a school resource officer pending an investigation after a video surfaced showing him tossing a student across a classroom floor.
Fields is the deputy assigned to Spring Valley High School.
It is not clear why the student was asked to leave or the sheriff’s office response to the officer’s reaction.
Richland County spokesman Lt. Curtis Wilson said the Sheriff’s Department is in the process of determining what happened.
