Alton Sterling’s family denounces violence in Dallas
Sterling was killed during an altercation with two white police officers.
According to CNN, Michael McClanahan, Baton Rouge NAACP President, plans to challenge the attitude of Baton Rouge Police.
Sterling was fatally shot by police early Tuesday in Baton Rouge, La.
A Go Fund Me page initiated by actress Issa Rae was set up on Wednesday, July 6, a day after Alton Sterling was shot.
Quinyetta McMillon, the mother of Alton Sterling’s son, delivered a powerful message Friday on the fatal shootings against police officers in Dallas.
“It’s everything adding up”, said Damond Laurance, 29, a welder. “It is up to us to take a stand and demand that they “stop killing us”.
Philando Castile was shot dead after the vehicle in which he was travelling was stopped by police near St Paul, Minnesota, late on Wednesday.
“What we’re going to do is root out the 1% of bad police officers that go around being the judge, the jury and executioner of innocent people, period, but more specifically, innocent Black lives”, McClanahan said.
Her face lighting up with a slight smile as she talked, McMillon said Alton Sterling was close to their son. Candle-lit balloons were released into the hot night air nearby in honor of Sterling and protesters waved signs and chanted slogans.
“It is being led by the US Department of Justice”, Louisiana Governor Jon Bel Edwards told hundreds of people at Living Faith Cathedral in Baton Rouge on Thursday evening.

Sterling pleaded guilty in 2011 to being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegally carrying a weapon. Moments later, one of the officers shot and killed Sterling, a black man who had been selling CDs outside the store, while he was on the ground. If that’s the case, and Sterling had never taken the gun from his pocket, then why was a 911 call placed about him?
Sterling, a father of five, had several criminal convictions since the mid-1990s for battery, resisting arrest, burglary and other crimes. The federal Justice Department has launched an investigation.
