Alvarez beats Cotto to win WBC middleweight title
Check out highlights of Canelo Alvarez’s big win over Miguel Cotto.
“Anything he can bring, I’m ready for it”, Alvarez said. “Why would I fight them in my 50th fight?”
It was youth vs. experience at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino on Saturday night.
Cotto has already said he doesn’t have much time in the ring left. His goal? Unify the belts in the middleweight division. As the main contender for WBC title, Golovkin was waiting for the results of the fight between Miguel Cotto, current title holder and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Oscar De La Hoya, the Golden Boy Promotions CEO who handles Canelo’s fights, was tentative about proclaiming a Canelo-Golovkin match next. Triple G will be at ringside, hoping that he will get the victor sometime next year, and unbeaten light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev will also be on hand.
Oddly enough, Canelo isn’t showing signs of being weakened despite him rehydrating to the mid-170s for his fights. Alvarez is already a consistent pay-per-view draw, with his only loss coming in a fight with Mayweather that he proved too inexperienced to win. Cotto threw 374 jabs to Alvarez 186, so he stockpiled the punches.
” Alvarez became the 14th fighter to win world titles at junior middleweight and middleweight and the first from Mexico to do so”.
No one’s quite sure if that means at 154, 160 or somewhere in between. “I’m the champion, I don’t have to do what he wants”. Will there be a rematch with Cotto? Canelo hit 118 power punches for 40% compared to Cotto’s 75 for 29% during their title fight Saturday night the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada.
He did not do a postfight interview, nor did he appear at the postfight news conference.
“I don’t know what he’s going to do”, Roach said of the 35-year-old Cotto, whose brilliant career will certainly land him in the worldwide Boxing Hall of Fame someday. “I would love to fight “GGG” when the time and opportunity come, more than willing and able to… when the time comes”. “I thought we had the edge”. I believe that in the future there are many very interesting fights for Saul.
“If it’s over, it’s over. He’s a fighter we haven’t seen the best of yet”. Unlike Mayweather, according to De La Hoya and other detractors, Alvarez maintained his superiority while thrilling a capacity crowd.
But De La Hoya confirmed that the Genady Golovkin fight is happening sooner or later as his fighter only wants the best opponents. It would make sense if the promoter wanted to delay the bout given that Alvarez is the only superstar on his roster, and Golovkin is perhaps the lone fighter who would be favored over him.
That has added further interest and intrigue to tonight’s fight, and has ensured this bout has caught wide attention among devoted boxing fans as well as fringe fans. “You’ve got two guys who can really punch”.
