Alzheimer’s Research United Kingdom charity warns of ‘looming national health crisis’ as
Around one in six people who are older than 80 years of age suffer from dementia, which is most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s, which results in a loss of brain cells and affects the functioning of the brain.
Norton described the disorder as “our greatest medical challenge” and urged investment in research to find new treatments and possible preventions. Dementia is a collective name for progressive degenerative brain syndromes which affect memory, thinking, behaviour and emotions. Researchers also found that there are more than 9.9 million new cases of dementia each year worldwide, implying one new case every 3.2 seconds.
There are now more than 342,800 Australians living with dementia and this number is expected to increase to 400,000 in less than 10 years. Their research is building our understanding of the diseases that cause dementia and paving the way to treatments that could help the 850,000 people with the condition in the United Kingdom , over 8000 of whom are living in Cambridgeshire. The drug worked by blocking an enzyme in the brain called p300, which is known to be raised in Alzheimer’s patients and triggers tau acetylation.
The borough is only the second in London to achieve the “Working to become a Dementia-Friendly Borough” status.
The announcement comes ahead of World Alzheimer’s Day on Monday 21 September.
The Health Ministry’s new strategy, which is scheduled to run until 2025, aims to make Denmark more dementia-friendly by speeding up the diagnosis so that sufferers can start treatment sooner, thus helping supporting relatives in their day-to-day lives.
However, as we reported a month ago, another study came to the surprise conclusion that the risk of dementia may actually be falling in some western countries.
“This centre will be an ideal place for people in Aberdeen to get access to some of that support”.
Praising the public’s support, volunteer co-ordinator Barbara Baker said: “We couldn’t have done it without the help of family and friends”.
