Amazon, CBS exclusive content deal
The move makes Amazon Prime the video home of upcoming comic thriller series BrainDead, where members will be able to stream episodes four days after a broadcast airing.
Inc signed a content licensing deal with CBS Corp for three new shows, the latest move in the e-commerce giant’s attempt to cater to the rising popularity of on-demand content. That quick turnaround model was pioneered by CBS three years ago for drama “Under the Dome“, and has been a crucial source of financing for the Eye in expanding its slate of summer scripted series. The series has already been picked up by Amazon for full streaming rights, long before its scheduled premiere.
Under an agreement announced Thursday, the online retailer will continue to have the exclusive streaming rights to CBS’ first-run scripted summer shows, making them available on its Prime Video service four days after their network broadcast.
This deal will also extend and expand other CBS and SHOWTIME titles available to Prime members down the road.
If you thought Amazon was done getting cozy with CBS, think again.
CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves has previously said Amazon’s financial input has been key allowing the shows, which are produced for the traditionally quiet period normally dominated by repeats, to run to big budgets and subsequently hoover up good audiences.
The deal builds on the relationship between the two companies, which started back in February 2013, when CBS agreed to name Amazon the exclusive streaming home of Under The Dome. “With a truly original, genre-bending concept from outstanding creative auspices, Braindead will be one of the most talked-about shows next summer by CBS viewers and Prime members”. CBS Films available for Prime members include Inside Llewyn Davis and Pride, among others.
