Amazon is working on a secretive project called ‘Amazon Flex’
There are indications that the company’s new Kirkland, Wash., the facility will implement the Amazon Flex as the new method of distributing packages, that even the customers can pick up by themselves. It reads: “Please take a ticket located behind you”.
The program, which hasn’t been publicly announced by Amazon, was discovered at a facility in Kirkland, Washington and appears to involve either crowdsourcing deliveries by recruiting local individuals willing to take on the task, or allowing you to pick up your own packages. Please look for your number on the top corner of the wall on your left. Behind the group of people are visual guides indicating how a person should dress possibly to remind delivery people how to show up when making deliveries.
An alternative explanation for the sign could be that it relates to Amazon’s rumored crowdsourced package delivery service.
Amazon Flex is still under wraps and the company hasn’t said anything about it, but there is some speculation as to how it will work.
Drizly, the alcohol delivery start-up which now operates in 17 cities across the US, is active in the Seattle market and probably won’t be too keen to see Amazon looming on the horizon.
Of course, with the company gradually rolling out its super-fast Prime Now delivery service to addresses close to its distribution centers, Prime members in the area need only wait two hours at most for an item to arrive at their door.
For Amazon, Flex would help it cut costs, eliminating last-mile delivery charges while at the same time offering customers a new way to get their goods. GeekWire also reported that there are liquor license applications for Amazon’s soon-to-be sites, which could suggest that Prime Now might be tapping into delivery of beer, wine and liquor.
