Amazon makes move for High Street with first physical book store
It’s this smell that drives Jakatdar to step into a bookstore whenever she’s around one and has the time.
“It’s easier for me to browse visually”, the Seattle resident said. “I like to be pulled in by something I wasn’t expecting”.
One of the largest online retailers is entering the brick-and-mortar world, as e-commerce giant Amazon opened its first ever physical bookshop in Seattle this week and confirmed that the store would stock thousands of the most popular titles from its website.
The Amazon retail space has your typical sections to find biographies, historical non-fiction, crime and thrillers, etc., but most books come with an Amazon customer review excerpt, the average star rating and a scannable bar code to find more information about the book and author. The bookstore is located in Seattle’s University Village and will be open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

The new bookstore commits considerable floor space to showcasing various gadgets, including Amazon’s top-selling media-streaming device Fire TV and its latest line of Fire tablets. It’s called, imaginatively, Amazon Books. After helping to create an age in which shoppers often check their phones for ratings or lower prices, Amazon has filled its bookstore with titles that have strong online reviews – and it says all the prices will be the same, on the Web or in the store.
The key to understanding Amazon as a business is that earning a profit is antithetical to its corporate culture and mission.
“All we need to do”, he said, “is just keep doing what we’re doing”.
Amazon Inc. simply made their online presence little more tangible for customers.
“It’s data with heart”, said Jennifer Cast, Vice President of Amazon books. “Early indications are that customers are enjoying it”.
“We’ve innovated in many ways in the books category over the past 20 years, and we believed we could innovate and give customers an additional, enjoyable way to discover great books”, she said in an email.
On a few books, they’ll explain if the author has won any awards for their work.
In contrast to indie bookstores in which clerks make cases for their favorite novels and poetry collections, or in which a New York Times review is pasted to a shelf, this one rely on endorsements from random Amazon customers – the enthusiasms of trevor2345 and the like.
“I probably buy 99% of everything on Amazon”.
There’s a reason Amazon went with a book store and not a tech store like Apple: it’s all about the perceived experience. “It’s nice to be able to try something, especially when buying it is a $226 investment”.
