Amazon To Exit Daily Deals With Closure Of Amazon Local
Amazon, com (NASDAQ:AMZN), it seems, has run its course in the daily deal market, as it prepares to board up this segment.
Amazon is exiting the daily deals space.
It’s time to add another service to the list of Amazon’s shuttered projects.
Amazon announced on its website that it would no longer offer daily deals as part of its Local unit as of December 18. The service was similar and in competition with PayPal Inc., and Square, the mobile payments company led by none other than Twittter Inc.
The news comes just weeks after the company discontinued Amazon Destinations, an ill-fated hotel bookings service that launched earlier this year in April. In September, rival Groupon announced it planned to lay off about 1,100 people, or almost 10 percent of its staff, over the next year and shutter operations in several smaller countries.
Although Amazon declined to comment on why it’s putting the brakes on Amazon Local, it’s fair to assume that customers have been growing increasingly tired of daily deals. The company has for a few time been trying to venture into more diverse markets under the radar of local commerce.
Don’t worry, if you already have purchased something via Amazon Daily Deals or Amazon Local, you can still use that voucher or coupon after December 18, 2015, according to Geek Wire.
From today until the date of the shutdown, Amazon will clear out its inventory and continue to sell deals, and customers will be able to use both the site and app as usual.
“We’ve learned a great deal from the daily deals business and will look for ways to apply these lessons in the future as we continue to innovate on behalf of our customers and merchants”, reads a statement provided by Amazon to Engadget.
