American Airlines recognizes Vietnam veterans

Veterans Day is an official United States federal holiday that is observed annually on November 11, honoring people who have served in the Armed Forces.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day in November 1919 and was created to honor veterans of World War I. Last year, VA Butler was honored to provide care to 19,855 veterans.

Veterans Day is November 11, the day we thank our living veterans for protecting the freedom we enjoy, the freedom many Americans take for granted.

In 1954, after having been through World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress – at the urging of the veterans service organizations – amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans”.

Each veteran, no matter what war or conflict they served, paid a price.

By funding this expansion, service members will have access to group therapy, job coaching, mentoring by fellow veterans, and specialized treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse that is, unfortunately, a reality within the community due to self-medicating. Two polls released today by Got Your 6 and ServiceNation reveal that the nation’s perception of veterans is changing to better reflect the realities of those who served.

Another Veterans Day is just around the corner, and while our soldiers, both past and present, are never far from my mind, at this time of year I especially think about all that it means to serve our country in the military. It is to these men and women that we pay tribute on Veterans Day. It is unfathomable for us that each night in America, there are 50,000 homeless veterans and an additional 1.4 million at risk of being homeless due to poverty, a lack of support networks, and substandard living conditions.

At 5 p.m. today, the Daughters of the American Revolution-Charity Stille Langstaff Chapter will host a “Wreath Laying Ceremony” in front of the Callaway County Courthouse to honor fallen Vietnam soldiers.

The 19th annual program will take place on the Public Square near the War Memorial Monument at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
