American detained after crossing from Syria into Turkey
The American journalist was arrested in Turkey after being accused of illegal trespassing in a military zone. Snell is a video journalist whose work, according to her Twitter profile, has featured on media including MSNBC, VICE, and Vocativ. He said the important thing is to prevent these people from traveling to Turkey in the first place and that the responsibility for preventing this falls on the shoulders of Europe and other countries.
The CPJ has demanded that the Turkish authorities release Snell. “She is now being held at a prison facility in Hatay province”. I believe that’s how you say it. “Consular officers from the consulate office in Adana visited Ms. Snell most recently on the 26th of this month and are providing all possible consular assistance”.
A State Department official said the US government was aware of Snell’s presence in Syria and that helping her to get to a safe location was the agency’s consistent and overriding goal.
MR KIRBY: Lindsey. L-i-n-d-s-e-y.
QUESTION: Yeah. Is – was the arrest at all related to her profession as a journalist or in any case – any way associated with that?
Kirby said Turkish authorities have told the USA that Snell crossed from Syria into Turkey and has been charged with “violating a military zone”. I can’t speak to that.
“I can’t wait to share the details”, she said on August 5.
The Florida native, who has also reported for Vice, ABC and Yahoo, had interviewed members of al Qaeda’s Al Nusra Front in Syria, but said at the beginning of August that she had spent two weeks as their captive. I’m sorry, I just didn’t hear the details exactly. Her alleged crime: violating a military zone. “We call on the government to end its harassment of reporters crossing the border from Syria”.
Hatay Governor Ercan Topaca confirmed that the US journalist was detained by authorities. In her Facebook post, Snell said she was taken hostage while filming in Syria.
Two days ago, with the help of an incredible, selfless badass, I managed to escape.
“I must apologise to my friends and colleagues for all the pain and worry this caused you”.
Snell was captured by Jabhat al-Nusra or now, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (JFS), sometime in July, but was able to continue using her phone.
