American Diabetes Month 2015: Eat Well, America
Each and every one of us can help to reverse this alarming trend. Whether you are one of the almost 30 million Americans living with diabetes or the 86 million Americans with prediabetes or you simply want to live a healthier lifestyle, the Eat Well, America! campaign will show you how easy and joyful healthy eating can be for everyone. Millions of others are considered at high risk for developing diabetes.
The real worry is that the people who are now developing Type 2 diabetes are doing so due to poor diet and lifestyle.
Worldwide, 415 million adults have diabetes, and 85 to 90 per cent of those cases are type 2. The results of GRADE will help doctors guide the management of individuals with type 2 diabetes in the future. Prediabetes is a condition in which the body has difficulty processing glucose because it is struggling to make enough insulin. It’s not clear why this happens, but genetics and factors such as weight and a sedentary lifestyle can play into the equation, Mayo Clinic experts say. When insulin circulates, it enables sugar to enter cells and lowers the amount of sugar in the bloodstream.
Type 2 diabetes is in most cases associated with obesity.
It is crucial to consult a General Physician to determine whether you have an impaired metabolism, prediabetes or diabetes to detect and control the disease at the earliest stages. They include an online risk awareness tool, a nationwide roadshow moving throughout 14 towns and cities – including the Otara markets – and the first Diabetes NZ Fitbit MoveMeant Day on November 28.

Speak to your primary care physician about steps you can take to prevent diabetes and maintain good health. An A1C of 6.5 percent or above indicates you have diabetes. Anything under 5.7 percent is a normal level. Are you eating well?
The system automatically programs and adjusts blood glucose levels, acting much in the same way as the pancreas in people without diabetes. A level of 126 mg/dL or above indicates diabetes.
Oral glucose tolerance test. This two-hour test also requires overnight fasting, followed by drinking a sugary beverage and periodic blood sugar level tests over the next couple of hours.
During this period, MediRite’s friendly and qualified pharmacists will attend to any consumers who wish to have their blood sugar levels tested, free-of-charge. “If they were five or higher we did an A1C test”, said Spratt, who noted that through local health fairs, they’re identifying a lot of people with prediabetes.
The American Diabetes Association also offers an online risk assessment tool for diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is often regarded as Insulin-dependent diabetes; it is also sometimes recognized as Juvenile diabetes or Early-on- set diabetes, because it mostly develops before the age of forty (40) or usually during the teenage years. Having a parent, brother, or sister can up your chances of getting the disease, too, she said.
The mobile diabetes awareness team has been at the Otara Markets helping people understand their risks and encouraging exercise and healthy eating.
The American Diabetes Association is working alongside Health Department representatives in order to increase the general public’s awareness when it comes to the risk factors as well as the symptoms associated with the disease.
