‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ episode 3 review
Hotel’s “Mommy” was so creepy! The unfortunate thing is that by the time Donovan realized that he shouldn’t let his mother die, she nearly was.
Things don’t get any easier for John.
It’s a good thing the Countess has all those old, blue, borrowed corpses lying around because there’s going to be a wedding at the Hotel Cortez!
The effect of Denis O’Hare’s “no one will love you as much as your mother” monolog on Bomer isn’t terribly convincing, but if nothing else, I enjoy how much fun he’s having in his otherwise inconsequential role. Now that sounds obscene. He’s mad impressed that James March was such a successful serial killer, especially now that he is a murderous pseudo-vampire and understands how awesome inflicting violent death on others can be. Alex believes that her daughter is trying to hurt her, but Scarlett insists that she saw her baby brother. He was getting even worse and she was pissed. Hearing about her super special relationship with Holden makes their reunion in the hallway all the more powerful. Everything changed when Holden showed up, though.
“She lied to me”. Her resolve to end her marriage is a way to kill something that’s been dragging her down for years now.
The most intriguing aspect of the AHS: Hotel installment is the amount of history there is to unpack.
Holy moly, American Horror Story is on Wednesdays now? She is shocked and turns away. He goes to her room and finds that Sally has tied a plastic bag over Iris’ head to hasten death. Lowe has other ideas, quoting from the Bible, “Thou shall not bear false witness”. That’s where Countess comes in (having interrupted Tristan’s make-out/murder plan). He tells her that he wants to help her and she says that she wishes he could. “Why are you wasting your time on junkies?” You don’t really get a sense of any of the extraneous trappings of her being a global icon. He gets really upset and starts crying. Sally and Donovan end up being bridging characters, connecting everything together as they drift from pairing to pairing. He tells Sally that he knows she texted him. So how is she alive now? Then he said that he was leaving.
Ramona cut herself to allow him to feed on her, however, their eternity was cut short soon after. He was about to stab an unsuspecting woman. She kneels down in front of him and he says, “Hi, Mommy”.
John is thrown another curveball when Alex stops by to serve him with divorce papers. “Something’s wrong with me”.
How did Holden get to the hotel?
Also, just a quick observation, but Kathy Bates is truly AHS’s unsung hero – the HBIC of the last three seasons, in my opinion. I can’t. I’m dying. The two are discussing how to revamp the floor when they come across Tristan.
The Countess used to be rich but lost all her money after she invested it with Bernie Madoff (a distracting, pointless aside), so she needs Drake’s money to sustain the hotel. She tells Tristan that she will marry Drake and take every penny, and then they can kill him. When they nearly have sex, he tells her he wants another baby. Sally, ever-helpful, offers to shoot her up with a lethal overdose, but it’s not enough. It’s about why continue to live.
The woman who took Donovan, Ramona Royale, was taking Donovan’s blood on AHS: Hotel. He then finds someone who seems to have auto trouble. “It was glorious”, she said. He has had this incredible love [The Countess] who has educated him and cultured him and taught him so much about life and love and art and survival. Ramona wants Donovan to be her spy on the inside. After all, “there can only be one queen”. Then again, Countess can be very persuasive. Their relationship is both parental and sexual, which is likely why Donovan is so quick to reject Iris: for years, he’s been living with a new, totalizing “mommy” figure – the Countess, who’s now abandoned him.
In the meantime, Donovan and Iris are going through a few issues. She set her sights on Moses and eventually turned him as well. She also ran into a dead Claudia… So he turned her! This episode, titled ‘Mommy, ‘ was less about the goriness and more about the storyness. After all, Liz has her own problems: a certain male organ prevents her from wearing pencil skirts!
Back in the world of the Countess, however, the unpredictable Duffy attempts to seduce Will Drake (Cheyenne Jackson) with intentions of killing him, Duffy’s new-found favorite hobby.
And within 60 seconds of Ramona’s first appearance, it was official: She’s the best Bassett yet.
Last week’s episode of American Horror Story: Hotel (“Chutes and Ladders“) presented the larger theme of the season, beyond the scares and Ten Commandments-themed mysteries, a story that would focus on addiction as a way of losing oneself. She loved Holden more than anyone, and she never recovered after his disappearance. As the lights flicker in the elevator, Sally does her best to seduce him.
The family therapy was called for because of Scarlett’s stories about finding Holden. On her way out, in the hallway, she sees the bloodied fashion editor, who asks her if this is hell.
Royale’s quest for revenge for being cast out of the hotel is sparking the promise of a bitter bitch-on-bitch battle to come.
Ramona’s return will surely impact the Countess’ current plans to marry Will Drake in order to take his fortune.
The Countess Went to Season One’s Murder House-Possibly for an Abortion. So will Ramona and the Countess face off?
