American Lindsey Vonn completes sweep at Lake Louise with super-G win
Lindsey Vonn won a super-G race Sunday to complete a sweep of World Cup races at Lake Louise for the third time in her career. Vonn also accomplished the feat at the Alberta resort in 2011 and ’12.
Don’t look now, but Vonn is in striking distance of Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 career World Cup victories, a mark for many years believed to be untouchable.
“It was a big deal”, Vonn said.
American teammate Stacey Cook was third, 0.39 seconds back.
“I think (course conditions) were a little bit better than I expected”, said Vonn, who’s from Vail, Colorado. Luckily, she rose to her feet and was able to ski down unassisted, but her promising race run was over.
Lindsey Vonn drew on her storied history at Lake Louise and won again despite a near fall Friday. Maze, the 2013 champion, is taking a season off.
But with her latest triumph, she edged just ahead of compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin 300-296 for the overall season points lead and took the Super-G lead as well.
“It was so fun”.
“I wanted to give everybody a podium”, Yurkiw said. “So I’m thankful that I was on the right side of the gate and made it to the finish”, reasoned Vonn.
“I felt like I was trying to be aggressive and trying to still ski solidly, but nothing was kind of going my way”.
She could not keep Vonn at bay, though, the American showing herself as a class apart as she surged to another impressive victory. “I’m sure once she gets the hang of it, she’s going to be risky”. “The season that I won the four titles. We’ll just hopefully both be kicking ass”. Vonn learned another as she avoided a crash Friday.
There’s another downhill Saturday. She heads to Val-d’Isere, France, for a pair of downhills December 18-19. I just think she’s a really, really good skier. I think (wax tech) Heinz (Hammerle) is doing an incredible job.
Alpine Canada is slowly grooming Grenier, the first woman out of the start hut Sunday, for speed events. I feel really confident in super-G.
“I knew from experience I could make it up if I skied well”, Vonn said. “I’m happy with my run and nearly got a top-15”.
