American Red Cross holds blood drives across Northern Indiana
The organization is urging eligible donors to give blood to ensure there is enough blood to meet patient needs throughout the summer.
On Thursday, there will be a blood drive at the Toledo Presbyterian Church, on the corner of Fourth and Augustus, from 1 to 5:30 p.m.
The Red Cross says it now has less than a five-day supply.
Despite the season, the need for blood remains constant and patients continue to depend on the generosity of blood donors to meet that need.
There is a drop in blood donations during the summer months as families go away for vacation.
In the USA, every two seconds someone like Ray Poulin needs blood or platelets.
Blood donations are needed for accidents, burns, heart surgeries and organ transplants.
Despite receiving thousands of blood donations after an emergency request was made in early July, the Red Cross is still in need of donations of blood and platelets. Those who give by August 31 will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card code.
The organization says that all blood types are urgently needed to help restock shelves.
“Just realize that blood is perishable”. “There isn’t a stockpile we can draw on”.
“Blood is not something that can be manufactured”. Donors looking to reduce their wait times can make appointments to donate and complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at redcrossblog.org.
