American sportsman dies in parachute accident in Turkey
Ian Flanders, known as Batman, died after a parachute cord wrapped around his leg as he dove off a mountain cliff and lost control. ‘We landed in the river, which was also actually kind of fun.’.
The athlete’s body was recovered from the river by boat and has been taken to the Kemaliye State Hospital.
Flanders had performed numerous base jumps before the fatal accident. Flanders then spoke to reporters, saying that it was his first time in Kemaliye and that he had experienced great jumps so far.
CBS News reports Flanders was the 264th BASE jumper to die since records began being kept.
At the time of his death, Flanders had been working on a documentary about the rash of deaths in the BASE-jumping community.
A Newport Beach man died in a freak accident after a base jumping attempt in Turkey. “It seems like not a month goes by without a well-known BASE jumper or wing-suit flyer dying these days”.
Someone called for help after losing contact with Potter, 43, and his climbing partner, Graham Hunt, 29.
He said a search-and-rescue team looked for the men overnight but couldn’t find them. However, parachutes designed to slow their descent had not been deployed, Gediman said.
The horrific death was captured on camera as the extreme sports event was being shown on local television.
