Americans Can Have Cell Phone Roaming in Cuba
Verizon Wireless will soon start offering cellular roaming services in Cuba as the thaw in relations between the United States and the Communist island nation continues to develop.
Starting next week, Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) Wireless customers who travel internationally can connect easily while in Cuba, through the company´s Pay-As-You-Go worldwide Travel option.
Earlier this year, USA officially reopened its embassy in Cuba as diplomatic relationship between the two countries are improving.
The United States removed the embargo on telecommunications technology, as well as, services and equipment as a fall out of both the countries move to restore diplomatic relations.
The new period of political amicability between the S and Cuba has some wireless carriers scrambling to add the latter to their list of covered countries.
According to a company press release, beginning next week those traveling to the area can opt-in to a Pay-As-You-Go worldwide Travel option that will offer voice calls for $2.99 per minute and data for $2.05 per megabyte. Just this week, Cuba appointed an ambassador to the U.S.-the first since 1961.

When it comes to cell phone service, the introduction of more providers will likely come as a welcome development in Cuba, as only 2 million of its 11 million-strong population now have mobile access. The wire service reported that USA firm Boost Mobile offers a pre-paid plan in Cuba.
