Americans hold Trump and Democrats Responsible for Three Day Government Shutdown
There are some Republican analysts who suggest giving in to the president’s demands for a border wall if it leads to concessions on DACA and then just stall on funding later.
However, hundreds of thousands of Americans will not. To me, this smacks of Adolf Hitler’s obsession with keeping Germany a nation of white, Norse-like citizens by his efforts of ethnic cleansing – exterminating Jews, Gypsies and anyone he regarded as inferior. It’s hard to imagine any kind of immigration bill passing the Senate in less than three weeks.
In agreeing on Monday to end a three-day government shutdown and fund the government until February 8, Senate Democrats got a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he would allow an immigration debate on the Senate floor in the near future, the first one since 2013.
How much did the Democrats miscalculate on this strategy?
MacArthur’s campaign consultant, Chris Russell, sought to link Kim to the congressional Democrats who voted against the spending bill that would have kept the government open. USPS still delivered mail, Americans received their Social Security checks and airports ran on schedule., Unfortunately, agencies that pay out small business loans, passport offices, the Library of Congress, military intelligence operations and weapons and equipment maintenance were put on hold. McConnell took to the mics last week to declare “I’m looking for something that President Trump supports”. However, government shutdowns harm at risk groups that Democrats claim to represent. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., their parties’ No. 2 leaders. Hours later the Senate passed the final bill by the same 81-18 vote, sending it to the House, which quickly voted its approval and sent the measure on to President Donald Trump.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the proposal was “totally unacceptable to the president and should be declared dead on arrival”. It was the Democrats who sought a shutdown, believing that more Trumpian “chaos” would surely pad their already sizable lead in the polls – but it was Democrats who blinked, ending the shutdown in its early days, believing that to continue it would be risky to their political fortunes. Mr Trump at first urged legislators to craft a bipartisan “bill of love”, which he would sign.
Still, the promise to bring an immigration bill before at least one house of Congress is significant. But Speaker Paul Ryan didn’t want to break the Hastert Rule (named after the admitted child molester Republican ex-speaker Dennis Hastert) which requires majority Republican support before a bill is brought to the floor. “They blinked”, principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah told CNN. The delusion continues when Schumer falsely stated President Trump could have made a deal anyway!
Liberal activists were rightly skeptical of the deal.
“I spent my entire adult life looking out for the well-being, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible”, Duckworth said.
Lawmakers on both sides of the political divide are breathing sighs of relief that they were able to seemingly save face and pass a bill to fund the government for a mere three weeks.

Who couldn’t have seen that they’d fire public relations salvos of their own – keening that the Democrats care more about immigrants here illegally than they do Americans who depend on the government – while waiting for anger and frustration to mount against Democrats? The generic ballot poll asking people which party they prefer in November has the Dems ahead by 8 points.
This is partly spurious because the Department of Defense does not completely shut down even when the government does. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both of whom have talked about the consequences of a prolonged shutdown, seemingly had no time or no interest in sitting down with each other before noon Friday as the deadline rapidly approached.
In fact, Trump, who regularly disrupted negotiations in recent weeks, had been a relatively subdued player in the weekend debate. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from SC, said when informed of the White House’s announcement. This says nothing of the loss to the economy if good, trained workers were lost, the gut-wrenching social cost of breaking up families and the damage to our image overseas. Quite a few Democrats, especially the 10 Senators running for reelection in states that Trump won, are clearly prepared to negotiate.
