Amid tensions with North, US military deploys attack drones to South Korea
In a test earlier this month, North Korea launched four medium-range ballistic missiles toward Japan, with the projectiles landing about 200 miles off the country’s coast. But it’s very much reality.
The threat represented by North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile arsenal is the main reason for his trip to the region. So if South Korea asks for hard-line moves, it is likely that the United States will respond.
“They’ve been focused on ISIS, but North Korea’s latest saber-rattling is now forcing them to look at Asia”, Pho said.

While the USFK says it “routinely” conducts CSG operations in waters around the ROK to “exercise maritime maneuvers” and “strengthen the U.S. -ROK alliance”, North Korea has ratcheted up its rhetoric since the U.S. -ROK joint military drills began. South Korea has an even bigger stake in engagement with the North in order to reduce the costs it will bear if reunification were to ever take place.
“North Korea will soon be in reach of ICBM capacity”.
Last year, the exercise involved about 17,000 United States troops and more than 300,000 South Koreans.
The Six-Party Talks also served to sit Beijing and Washington on the same table on a regular basis and to discuss a key concern for both of them.
Trump would find his hand clipped, giving a leeway to Pyongyang to continue its nuclear program, if he seeks more sanctions on North Korea.
What does “America First” mean for Trump’s ties with South Korea?
Seoul’s relationship with Washington is not clear altogether – this confusion has to be removed.
Donald Trump has tweeted that China needs to be “taken on” and decried the country’s “military complex” in the South China Sea. Beijing’s bottom line is keeping the Kim dynasty afloat to maintain a strategic ally as well as a token of communist rule. Let’s not forget, he was based in Macau under the implicit protection of China. We’ve seen this same old game for every USA presidential election: the missile test shortly after the inauguration was Pyongyang’s way of proposing a negotiation. Trump’s National Security Council is reportedly conducting an in-depth review of United States policy toward North Korea, and considering a number of policy options, ranging from preemptive strikes on North Korean nuclear facilities to “soft” regime change through the imposition of harsher sanctions. Beijing wants to stop this at all costs.
For the past few months, South Korea has been facing internal political cleavage, which is not yet over.
Li said China hopes all parties make concerted efforts to de-escalate tensions and get back to the track of dialogue in order to find proper solutions. It has called on North Korea to stop carrying out its missile tests, while also saying that South Korea and the us should cease their drills – with the state-run Chinese newspaper the Global Times saying the drills were sending the North “an explicit radical threat”. The benefits go beyond reining in Pyongyang.
He also implied that the resulting devastation from the test could lead to the downfall of Kim Jong Un’s regime.
Chinese strategists have long anxious about the possible collapse of the reclusive state, leaving China without a buffer to U.S. forces under a unified Korea. Seoul has advocated sanctions and pressure, and now, it has requested hard-line moves like identifying North Korea as a terrorist-sponsoring state and disqualifying it from global organizations. We can not expect that the millions who filled the streets since October will sit quietly if the next Blue House occupant – in their eyes – gives in to Beijing or Washington.
