Amtrak passenger train derails; four injured
The track where Monday’s crash occurred had been part of a $220 million upgrade of New England Central Railroad tracks funded with help from a $50 million federal recovery grant.
The accidents included highway grade-crossing incidents.
Two of the the three Amtrak crew that were hospitalized have been released. The third died in a grade-crossing accident. Vermont governor, Peter Shumlin, said while this portion of the track was recently built, rockslides are not uncommon.
Malone Bridget Davis of County Limerick, Ireland, was another passenger who heard a loud bang and then felt the train braking hard before cars began to leave the track.
At least four people were injured and they are being transported for medical care, Huoppi said. The six others went to a hospital with injuries including neck, back and shoulder pains and lightheadedness.
Federal investigators are on the scene.
Ninety-eight people were aboard the train when it derailed, Central Vermont Medical Center spokeswoman Hjonis Hanson said.
Passenger Bob Redmond, of Bay City, Michigan, was taking a foliage tour when the train derailed.
Once he got off the train, Matthews said he saw a “bedlam of rock” underneath his auto and other train cars facing different directions. He told those present in Plumley Armory that passengers were being bussed to Springfield, Massachusetts where they could catch other trains. Passengers helped each other after the crash. Asked if she was upset about the unexpected change in circumstances, Davis said, Im just glad to be alive!.

The Vermonter, carrying 98 passengers and four crew members, had been on the tracks for about 90 minutes when it hit rocks that had fallen from a ledge onto the tracks in Northfield, about 20 miles southwest of Montpelier at around 10:30 a.m. Monday. Amtrak said none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. “Hit a rock slide”, an accompanying message said.
The train runs a daily commute between St Albans and Washington, D.C.
Green Mountain Hazardous Material and the Vermont State Police Mobile Command are also on the scene.

Amtrak confirmed in a Twitter post Monday that the Vermonter train had derailed.
Cranes will be brought in from Philadelphia to remove the engine and cars from the rails beginning later in the week and it is expected that the tracks will be repaired and ready for train travel within a few days.
Emergency crews responded to the derailment in Northfield, near the capital, Montpelier.
State police spokesman Scott Waterman says he has no information about injuries.
