Amy Schumer reacts to Golden Globe nominations
VOD favorites favorites, and past Golden Globe winners, such as Transparent, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards once again claimed high-profile nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The Golden Globe ceremony, often a raucous affair, will be held January 10 with Ricky Gervais as host.
Aussie apocalyptic blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road, revenge thriller The Revenant and harrowing kidnap tale Room and Spotlight have also been nominated for the best motion picture drama award.
Room’s Emma Donoghue, Spotlight’s McCarthy and Josh Singer, The Big Short’s Charles Rudolph and Adam McKay, Steve Jobs’ Aaron Sorkin, and The Hateful Eight’s Quentin Tarantino.
Streaming services stormed the Golden Globe television nominations on Thursday with new shows such as Narcos and Mozart in the Jungle, turning established broadcasters into also-rans as Americans move away from traditional television to online-demand viewing. But over in the Comedy Or Musical section of the film awards, we’ve got Joy and The Martian squeezed in alongside The Big Short, Spy and Trainwreck.
For best actor in a drama, the nominees are Cranston, Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Will Smith for Concussion, a story about a pathologist who diagnosed degenerative brain disease in American football players. Also, Al Pacino for his performance as an aging rock star in Bleecker Street’s Danny Collins and Mark Ruffalo the manic-depressive dad in Sony Pictures Classics’ Infinitely Polar Bear.
Brie Larson for “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”, Cate Blanchett for “Carol”, Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl” and Rooney Mara for “Carol”.
Also worth noting is comedian Amy Schumer’s newly-crowned status as the queen of comedy, with two nominations for Trainwreck for Best Actress In A Motion Picture, Comedy as well as Best Motion Picture, Comedy.
But Starz, which had two nominations previous year, enjoyed a happy uptick to six, spread across its series “Flesh & Bone”, “Blunt Talk” and time-travel romance “Outlander”, which got three nominations, including best drama, best actress (Caitriona Balfe) and best supporting actor (Tobias Menzies).
The Globes, announced next month, are seen as one of the indicators of Oscar contenders. “It took just three nominations, down from nine a year ago”.
While “Spotlight” received multiple nods, including best picture drama, the cast – including Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams – got bupkis. At least one (“Spies”) will be nominated for Oscar best picture, and you can make a case for others.
99 Homes, which hit theatres on October 9, also scored a Golden Globe nomination.
3 stars on the ascendant were nominated along with two veteran performers.
In the best animated film category, the Charlie Kaufman-scripted, stop-motion animated “Anomalisa” slotted in alongside a quartet of more family-friendly releases: “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur”, “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
“Game of Thrones”, a top victor at this year’s Emmys, received only one nomination- the best television drama series. Judith Light (“Transparent”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”) both secured nominations in the overstuffed category for supporting actress in a series, limited series or TV movie.
In the feature film category, Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation received a nod for best lead actor in a drama (Idris Elba).
