Ana Ivanovic’s coach collapses, rushed to hospital
“It’s the next step for me to try and achieve the goals I want to achieve and I am always looking at ways to get better and I am always working for that”, Raonic said.
Nigel Sears, the coach for Ana Ivanovic, collapsed on a stairwell in the middle of her third-round match against Madison Keys at the Australian Open.
Former pro Pam Shriver reported on ESPN that Ivanovic was aware of Nigel having similar previous episodes and both players were given option to further delay or cancel the match.
In her last match, Ivanovic had to wait for 30 minutes while a medical team attended to an elderly woman who took a tumble down the stairs. But she came back strong with a very powerful game…. He’s in the hospital cracking… jokes. “It was a tricky match”, Murray said.
“The match was suspended and the players updated on his condition”.
The 58-year-old remained in Epworth Hospital in Melbourne on Saturday night while he underwent a series of tests but is expected to be released later on today. “Said “he is conscious, talking, sitting up”.
Montenegro-born Raonic, who moved to Canada as a child, later explained that thoughts of the tragedy, which left four dead in a remote community, had given him enormous intensity as he played Troicki.
Murray said last month that he would quit the Australian Open if his wife went into labour. Now Sears will be heading home to rest and is expected to be back on the tennis courts with Ivanovic to get her ready for the rest of the season, as long as his health continues to improve.
Murray, Ivanovic, and Keys were all given the option to skip doing their post-match press conferences and all three did take that option.
Earlier, two-time champion Victoria Azarenka dropped her opening service game without winning a point, but recovered quickly to beat Japanese qualifier Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-1 win in 56 minutes. Azarenka is emerging as a favorite in the bottom half of the draw after No. 2 Simona Halep went out in the first round and No. 3 Garbine Muguruza fell in the third.
The Australian Open live blog identified him as Sears, who is not only Ivanovic’s coach but the father of Murray’s pregnant wife Kim Sears, who is due to give birth within weeks.
Murray and his Brazilian partner Bruno Soares beat Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Jerzy Janowicz 7-5, 6-3 before Inglot and Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt saw off Americans Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4. Keys triumphed 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours, 25 minutes.
“I felt really bad, I was actually shaking, because the sound of the lady falling was really loud…”
