And Now, The McKnight Case Will Get Completely Out Of Control
National Football League players are allowed to wear custom cleats this week, and as a result former USC star Reggie Bush is going to wear shoes honoring for Trojans standout Joe McKnight, who was shot and killed earlier this week.
Normand said his office had been publicly criticized for releasing Gasser, who is white, in the shooting of McKnight, a black football player who had a five-year career in the NFL.
By her account, McKnight tried to apologize for the road incident.
Ronald Gasser, 54, was identified as the shooter.
The witness said Gasser shot McKnight more than one time, then stood over him as he lay there bleeding and yelled, “I told you don’t you [expletive] with me”, before firing the final gunshot.
The JPSO believes Gasser “definitely” shot the ex-NFL running back – police say Gasser remained at the scene and “identified himself as the shooter and relinquished the semiautomatic handgun used in the lethal encounter”. “Shortly thereafter, the witnesses heard gunfire in rapid succession, which redirected their attention to the two vehicles”, the statement said, adding that Gasser had gotten out of his auto, gun in hand, and was moving around the rear of the vehicle when a bystander intervened to administer CPR to McKnight. No gun was found in McKnight’s possession, Normand said.
Police say there was some type of road rage incident, after which the men got into a verbal argument.
Normand also addressed potential protesters, saying if people wished to demonstrate “they do so peacefully” or will be subject to arrest.
On Saturday, Bush tweeted a picture of the cleats, which feature an image of McKnight in his USC uniform and the dates of his birth and death. I’ve been knowing him from 6, and this is just senseless, and it has to stop.
Colonel John Fortunato of the Parish Sheriff’s office is urging any witness to the encounter to come forward.
A few veteran players declined to comment in the locker room because they were so upset by the news, but later issued statements through the team. His release sparked protests outside the sheriff’s office.
The man pulled in the gas station and was filling his vehicle, when Gasser, “who had followed him into the station, confronted him and began to strike him with a closed fist several times”.
Carroll recruited McKnight to USC out of River Ridge, La., another New Orleans suburb, where he was considered the nation’s No. 1 prep running back. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Jets and spent three seasons in NY, piling up 505 rushing yards and averaging 28.7 yards on kickoff returns. Grimble was a redshirt freshman in 2010 and declared for the NFL Draft after the 2013 campaign, never playing with McKnight.
Shantell Dobard, 41, a relative of McKnight, told The Times-Picayune: “It’s got me sick to my stomach”.
