Andre Miller signing with Spurs
According to a report by Marc Stein of ESPN on Saturday, the Minnesota Timberwolves are continuing buyout negotiations with veteran guard Kevin Martin, with the San Antonio Spurs emerging as the favorites to land Martin if an agreement is indeed reached.
The Spurs were also reported to be a favorite for the services of another Wolves buyout candidate, shooting guard Kevin Martin.
In a vacuum, you’d usually rather have someone like McCallum than a 39-year-old Miller on your roster. For McCallum now, if he’s waived before March 1, he’d be eligible to sign with another playoff team before the final day of the season. He’s put up good numbers there, but he’s struggled to find minutes in San Antonio behind Tony Parker and Patty Mills.
To get the job done in that regard, this team will need some depth off the bench and Martin would provide just that.
Miller, the 8th overall pick of the 1999 NBA Draft and a 17-year veteran, was seldom utilized by the Wolves this season, only 10.8 minutes per game, as Minnesota is focusing on developing its young guards Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, and Tyus Jones. Martin could conceivably be a fit if he completely buys into Gregg Popovich’s system and spends more time as as spot-up shooter versus in isolation, but it doesn’t seem like it would be a seamless transition.
If the deal pushes through, Miller will play for the 9th National Basketball Association franchise of his career after the Cleveland Cavaliers, Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers, Portland Trail Blazers, Washington Wizards, Sacramento Kings, and the Wolves.
