Andy Kaufman and Redd Foxx Are Going on (Hologram) Tour
Both are set to go on tour next year, according to Hologram United States of America founder Alki David, with each hologram setting up “residencies in multiple locations in tourist-oriented cities across the country”.
Kaufman, who did everything from standup to being a co-star on the hit television show Taxi and even tried pro-wrestling, died in 1984, while fellow legendary comedian Foxx, who starred on his own hit TV show, Sanford & Son, died in 1991. Although completely different comics, their tour will feature their most well-known material including holograms of other famous faces. They’re the tech company responsible for bringing Billie Holiday and Whitney Houston back from the dead and on to the stage for big venue performances.
Hologram USA, an American hologram company, announced that it is turning experimental comedy legend Andy Kaufman and the King of Party Records Redd Foxx into holograms that will tour the country.
At worst, the holograms risk seeming like crass exploitation of dead performers unable to decide for themselves how their work and likenesses are used.
Hologram US has had a busy 2015.
Michael Kaufman, who represents Kaufman’s estate told the New York Times that he felt a hologram show was a great way for the next generation to discover Kaufman’s work.
The quality of these hologram performances, David said, is what will ultimately draw audiences, but until then: “The more shock value at the opening, the better”.
“I can’t not put the word “allegedly” in”, he added.
Though given the long-lived legend that Andy Kaufman is still alive and waiting to punk us all again, it’s easy to imagine his new show selling out in hopes that it’s actually just him, after all.
