Andy Lee calls out Gennady Golovkin and Danny Jacobs
Already the most polarizing man in boxing Saturday’s performance vs. Kell Brook has only widened the gap in opinion of Golovkin amongst fans.
Brook stepped up two weight divisions to fight Gennady Golovkin for his IBF, WBC and WBA “Super” middleweight titles on Saturday night, but his challenge ended in the fifth round when trainer Dominic Ingle threw in the towel after an onslaught from the Kazakh fighter. “For five rounds he’s given Golovkin a hell of a fight”. The top of his (Brook) eye socket was actually getting sunken into the bone. “It is down to the trainer with responsibility to realise sometimes you have to live to fight another day”. The implication that comes with that assertion is that with the lack of name worthy opposition going in to fights Golovkin doesn’t have much to worry about knowing he will win.
Saunders has an upcoming fight himself to worry about next month against an as of yet unnamed opponent, but provided he comes through that with a win and injury free, perhaps a Golovkin showdown in December in the United Kingdom could be a real early Christmas present for boxing fans.
“I respect Kell, he’s a warrior. It was game over”. But Golovkin quickly proved there was nothing in the rumours and hurt Brook with a left hook and a body shot in the opening round. Brook tweeted he needs an operation this week and his injuries are testament to the destructive power of Golovkin. This was the US-based Kazakh’s United Kingdom debut, but his third win over a Briton. Brook’s movement also created counter-punching opportunities, which he landed consistently, but Golovkin shook them off in a machine-like manner, continuing to push forward.
Ingle added that his charge was most likely to fight at 154lb when he makes his return next year. “I think right now this is best fight for us”.
Golovkin is a very unsafe middleweight with what looks to be once in a generation power and he has a higher boxing IQ than I initially gave him credit for. I saw his legs start to buckle. One thing I realized watching the post conference is that Golovkin’s English and comprehension of the English language is far better than we’re lead to believe. While at WBO level, reigning boss Billy Joe Saunders says he is up for the unification clash and that, after a “rust-removing” bout on the scheduled October 29 card topped by Fury-Klitschko II, he will gladly face Triple-G.
“I need my belts”, he said.
Boxer Liam “Beefy” Smith was given a warm send-off by youngsters from his old club, Rotunda ABC, who had a huge banner made especially to wish him luck ahead of his next title fight against Saul Alvarez next weekend in Texas.
