Andy Murray admits he must raise level against Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer
The 28-year-old Serb put the finishing touches to one of the greatest years in tennis history on Sunday when he swept aside old rival Andy Murray 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the Paris Masters.
He now has 10 Grand slam titles, four shy of Nadal’s haul and seven away from the all-time record of Federer.
Murray is set to lead Britain in their first Davis Cup final since 1978 against the Belgians on the clay courts of Ghent from November 27-29.
“It was a very intense game, he had set points and I held on”, Wawrinka said. Djokovic, who extended his winning streak to 22 straight matches, has now won 10 of his past 11 FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings with Murray, owning a 21-9 advantage overall.
For the two-time defending champion it was his third straight Paris crown, adding to his 2009 triumph.
Langer, 58, missed a chance to win on 18 in regulation when his 18-foot eagle putt lipped out.
The Briton showed courage to immediately break back after dropping his serve early in the second set, but Djokovic – the first player to reach 14 successive finals in the Open era – soon regained command of proceedings to secure an ominously emphatic 6-2 6-4 win over the man who sits second in the world rankings. Since the beginning of previous year, my results against him and Roger, from my perspective, haven’t been good enough.
Djokovic played a solid first set in which he was never truly tested by the Scot, Murray was always trying to impose himself on the rallies but he was either dumping the ball in the net or hitting his shots wide of the tramlines.
Murray struggled to shake off his persistent foe at the start of the second set and fended off another break point, holding serve with a much-needed ace.
Novak Djokovic finished the calendar year on a high as the Serb defeated Andy Murray 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the Paris Masters.
“The best players in the world are playing”.
“I’m still determined to improve, to get better”, Djokovic said, reports Yahoo Sports. I need to do better in those match-ups. “Hopefully I can finish off the season with another great win”, he quipped. He would snatch a second break for 5-2 and close out the opener after 42 minutes. Two more set points went sour, and suddenly, it was Wawrinka grabbing the first set.
“It’s a great thing to be top 10 now with the level of the game, but I’m still very hungry”.
Djokovic featured in all the master finals this season; winning the first three edition in Indian wells Miami and Monte Carlo, then he dominated in Rome and Shanghai.
