Andy Murray advances past Robredo
British number one Andy Murray progressed to the third round of the Canadian masters with a straight sets win over Tommy Robredo, 6-4 7-5.
It was better news in the men’s tournament as Murray overcame Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-4 7-5 in a match that had to be completed over two days.
The world number three, who will move up to second in the rankings if he reaches the final, took the initiative in the fourth game, breaking with a delightful lob.
Andy Murray admits that facing his brother Jamie in a doubles match at the Rogers Cup was “awkward”.
The Scot admitted he found the weather in Canada challenging as he progressed and said: “It was tricky conditions and when the shadow came across the court it was tricky”. Picking up the ball was hard.
“I lost my timing a little bit in the middle of the second set but came up with some good shots towards the end”. He last held the position – the highest of his career – in August 2009.
Luxembourg’s Muller, on the other hand, edged out France’s Gael Monfils 6-3, 3-6, 6 (4)-7(7) in just under two hours to book place in the third round of event.
The 2009 and 2010 champion claimed a routine 6-3 6-2 victory in 65 minutes and will be back on court later on Thursday alongside Leander Paes against sibling Jamie and his doubles partner John Peers.
“I don’t know how the Williams sisters did it in those big matches fighting for all those Grand Slams”, he added.
“Today was the best I hit the ball on the hardcourts since I started playing on it again”, said Murray, who was ousted in his first match in Washington last week on the same surface.
“It’s the first time me and Jamie have played each other professionally”.
