Andy Murray and victorious Davis Cup team visit Downing Street – but David
Despite the Davis Cup victory, Murray has been publicly critical of the Lawn Tennis Association for what he perceives as inaction and a lack of support.
Meanwhile the LTA will be hoping that their more conciliatory stance will stem further distractions from what Murray and the team are likely to win in the coming awards season. Now, I don’t know what the motivation was for this poor soul, but it did serve to remind me that to be a truly caring society we really must adopt a system that allows for assisted suicide.
Great Britain won the team tennis title for the first time in nearly 80 years against Belgium on Sunday, but laughed off suggestions of an open-top bus tour on their return to the UK.
Britain have enjoyed decent credibility in the professional ranks over the past 20 years courtesy of Tim Henman, Greg Rusdeski, who hailed from Canada, and Murray, but there does not even appear to be a level of British tennis mundaneness following Murray.
The LTA was heavily criticised for the failure to capitalise on Murray’s Wimbledon success in 2013, with p articipation falling in the months following his victory over Novak Djokovic and the organisation faced losing part of its funding from Sport England.
“It’s nearly sometimes like I feel like a bit like you waste time because nothing ever gets done so I also don’t want to waste my time talking about stuff. It’s probably the most emotional I’ve been at the end of a match”, Murray said. That’s also the reality.
Belgium captain Johan van Herck said Murray “was just a better player” as his team failed to win its first title. We may never get a better opportunity to do that than now. What we want to see is more people playing, so there should be a bigger talent pool in years to come.
But it will soon be back to tournament tennis, with Murray once again expected to plough a lone furrow for British players in the Grand Slams next year.
“I look at Wimbledon and think why aren’t they speaking out about the LTA when they have a chance to?”
Murray became only the third player after John McEnroe in 1982 and Mats Wilander in 1983 to achieve an 8-0 singles record in one calendar year since the introduction of the World Group in 1981. He is saying that he can’t be bothered to listen to the same old stuff.
