Andy Murray Doesn’t Think Nick Kyrgios Plays High Risk Tennis
(CNN)His controversial on-court behavior has been criticized by fellow tennis professionals, and he was dumped out of the U.S. Open in the first round.
“That’s where you have to realise that and just try to play solid”.
Murray, seeded third, broke the Aussie wild child’s serve seven times in an eventful 7-5 6-3 4-6 6-1 opening round win at Flushing Meadows. The 28-year-old Scot, who himself at times has been known to be a bit brash and petulant on the court, decided to sit this drama-fest out and let Kyrgios slowly implode on his own. Kyrgios responded by ripping two forehand return winners.
He had the whole stadium in raptures in the first set after fielding a Murray lob brilliantly through his legs, but later tried the same shot, without success, when a simple finish would have opened up break point.
“You start getting distracted by that stuff, it’s easy for you to lose your concentration”, Murray said after the win.
“Please don’t waste your talent, everyone in the world, especially Australians wants to respect you”, Warne said. Absolute stupidity. He could have volleyed that away for another break-point chance.
“He thinks he’s a Vaudeville entertainer”.
Kyrgios has enlisted the help of Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt and his newly-appointed “mentor” was watching on from the players’ box as his ward took on the world No3.
No stranger to controversies, Warne had some advice for Kyrgios through his official Facebook page.
“I think I’m on the right path. I don’t think any of us in this room right now were ideal at 20”.
He was later asked for this thoughts on the ATP punishment handed to Kyrgios.
Not everyone was hating on Kyrgios, though, with popular American sports journalist Bill Simmons saying he enjoyed the craziness. So Kyrgios won that set, the first one he has taken off of Murray in four meetings.
The Brit, who has made at least the quarter-finals in New York every year since 2010, goes on to tackle France’s Adrian Mannarino for a spot in the last 32.
But the fightback and any momentum he gained was shortlived, with Murray storming back in the fourth to close out the match and end Kyrgios’ run before it even began.
“I expected a very tough match, and that’s what I got”, Murray, 28, said. All top seeded players except Frenchman Gilles Simon advanced to the next round of the tournament.
Kyrgios was slapped with a 28-day ban and $25,000 fine over his verbal abuse of Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. He’s been there. He’s won Grand Slams. A first-round match that was over in four sets, and I will remember it.
