Andy Murray ends British three-year wait for Grand Slam
At the end of a brilliant two weeks of tennis at Wimbledon there could only be one victor and for the men it was Andy Murray.
Andy Murray, in 2013, became the first Britisher in 77 years to win the Wimbledon and then went on to guide Great Britain to a Davis Cup victory in 2015- their first win in 79 years.
Murray will join them but does not expect to feature as he – like Novak Djokovic – opts to sit out the tie to recover ahead of the Olympic Games and US Open next month.
Murray defeated Canada’s Raonic 6-4, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2) to win his third Grand Slam crown and become the first British man to lift multiple Wimbledon titles since Fred Perry in the 1930s.
“I was distracted by the major that was coming up because that was what really motivated me. And that was it”, he said.
Murray held his head in his hands and wiped away tears, overcome with emotion as the enormity of his achievement dawned on him.
Murray said: ‘I’m going to speak to Leon about that. “And I’ve learned that over the years, for sure”.
It is the first time since 2002 that neither Federer, Novak Djokovic nor Rafael Nadal have made the Wimbledon final.
The No. 2-ranked Murray most certainly did not forget how to win a Grand Slam title, of course.
“Hopefully he’s OK and gets back on the morphine”, Murray said.
But, like all true champions, it’s defeats that motivate him to success.
No.6 seed Roanic is contesting a Grand Slam final for the first time, but he’s a formidable opponent, who’s been taking lessons from consultant coach John You can not be serious Enroe.
“I appreciate he came to support yesterday and came to watch and like I said afterwards- it’s one of the hardest jobs in the world with lots and lots of responsibility”.
He added: “I’ll need to keep up my level of the last couple of months right through until the end of the year to close the gap”.
Murray himself had 1 ace in the forty minute first set. Now Lendl was back for No. 3. “Congratulations to Andy. This one’s gonna sting, so I’m gonna make sure, as these courts are green, that I do everything to be back here for another chance”.
As a player, Lendl who went 8-11 in major finals betrayed little emotion on court.
In his box, his wife Kim and mother Judy screamed with joy, while his coaching team hugged each other in delight. Murray then saved set point in the tenth game with a 40-15 win, and once again in the twelfth with another 40-15 game.
“Yeah, he was telling everyone it was allergies”. I’m genuinely calling him after here. But despite the heartbreaking loss to Murray at Wimbledon, Raonic insisted he would attempt to carry the same level of play and hopes for another masterful run when he hits the hard court in NY.
Sunday’s emphatic win repeated his Queen’s Club final victory over Raonic and crowned a ideal summer reunion with supercoach Ivan Lendl.
