Andy Murray knocked out of Wimbledon as Sam Querrey scores stunning upset
On the other half of the draw, Federer will face Berdych.
Djokovic said a right elbow injury was to blame for his retirement against 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Berdych, a player he had defeated 25 times in 27 previous meetings. Murray is bidding to make his eighth Wimbledon semi-final in the last nine years and is playing in his 10th straight quarter-final at the tournament.
Per the ATP, Querrey becomes the first man to win three consecutive five-setters at Wimbledon since Janko Tipsarevic in 2007.
Djokovic was very unhappy at having his fourth-round match delayed until Tuesday and then with the state of Centre Court but comfortably dispatched Adrian Mannarino. The Center Court is then slated to hold the match between Roger Federer and Canadian Novak Milos Raonic. “Being in a Wimbledon semifinal makes it a lot more special”.
This is the second year Querrey has scored a major win at Wimbledon. He outserved, outrallied and outbattled Murray in what was his THIRD fifth-set match in a row. The 35-year-old is playing in his 50th Grand Slam quarter-final and is closing in on becoming the oldest champion at the All England Club in the Open era.
Two-time champion Murray ensured that his slump did not last long, though, as he broke Querrey at the start of the third.
Querrey, the 24th-seeded American, will have to cause a sizeable upset to prevent that happening. It will also be Querrey’s first career Grand Slam semifinal appearance.
Murray, 30, led by a set and a break but the Briton lost 12 of the last 14 games as he struggled physically.
Just when it appeared to be going Murray’s way things changed in the fourth set. He entered the tournament after pulling out of two exhibition matches citing a sore left hip. Murray has lost his last three five-set matches overall. “Hopefully I can get into my rhythm and play good tennis”.
Lleyton Hewitt, the last man to win Wimbledon outside the big four, tipped Roger Federer to face Andy Murray in the 2017 final, though Marin Cilic could break their stranglehold. That only leaves Federer, the man who beat Cilic in the quarterfinals a year ago, if both get through their semifinal matches.
On No. 1 Court, Gilles Muller will be first against Marin Cilic. The development means that Wimbledon 2017 will feature a first-time finalist.
The reigning Wimbledon Champion has not fared well in Grand Slams this season after earning the world number one ranking at the end of a year ago.
Murray was forced to take two days away from the practice courts on the eve of the tournament before declaring himself fit.
