Andy Murray makes late appearance to watch Jamie win Australian Open title
Highlights on BBC Two from 14:05 GMT.
“Last year here is a good match for me to look at because the tennis, in my opinion, wasn’t miles apart”. His performance in the third-set tie-break, when he made six out of six first serves and hit one spectacular smash victor from behind the baseline, had been so ruthless that many observers started wondering how a Raonic-Djokovic final might play out. I was in my second (Grand Slam) semi-final. BBC tennis commentators Andrew Castle and John Lloyd provide a few pointers. At 4hr 3min, this match leaves Murray with a challenging turnaround, while Djokovic – who has a 4-0 record against him in Melbourne – will once again have the advantage after disposing of Roger Federer so impressively on Thursday.
But the world number two is not concerned by the history between the pair.
But Murray was not the one who ended up with a code violation Friday for breaking his racket with two hammer blows of frustration on the blue hard court.
“It doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past really. We’ve played a bunch of times here and hopefully this time it can be a different result”.
Although the head-to-head statistics give Djokovic a clear edge, Murray believes he can take heart from the closeness of the encounters he had with his great rival when losing to him previous year in Miami, Paris and here.
Djokovic, who has won three of the last four majors, is in inspired form at the moment. “I finished my match the other day indoors, we warmed up for the match today indoors, and then it was only literally 10 minutes before you go out on court you’re told that the roof’s going to be open”. Playing after the three-set women’s final, Soares served out the victory at 12.58am local time.
The odds seem stacked against Murray.
It is the first time two brothers have made separate finals at the same grand slam since Lawrence and Reginald Doherty achieved the feat at Wimbledon in 1906.
However, the Scot does have some high-profile wins over the Serb, including the 2012 US Open final and the 2013 Wimbledon final. While his father-in-law was being treated in hospital, Murray at times thought his departure from Australia may have been earlier than expected. “But Novak certainly has a chance to pull off a Grand Slam”.
“Draw on the positives, you’ve beaten him before and you can do it again. Good luck to Andy, @jamie_murray & @GordonReid91”.
Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic were born one week apart in May 1987.
“I think obviously if you play a quick match on the Friday, it doesn’t really make a huge difference”, Murray said. “So from that standpoint I’m not anxious going into long rallies”, Federer said. I’d be way more disappointed winning the Australian Open and not being at the birth of the child.
It means the British number one is the clear underdog ahead of the clash but he has stretched Djokovic before and can take belief from others who have turned the tide.
Murray has lost all four of his Australian Open final appearances. In the French Open semi-finals [in 2015] in the third and fourth sets he blew Novak off the court. “I don’t think that’s like myself to do, but sometimes it’s a little bit too much to keep in”.
