Andy Murray Reaches Fifth Australian Open Final
Live coverage of the match will be on British Eurosport and Eurosport HD. Highlights on BBC Two from 14:05 GMT.
Murray and his Brazilian partner kept their composure and made the crucial break in the fifth game of the second set, with the remainder going the way of serve to force the match to a decider.
“Yeah, a lot about tactics and a lot about how of course you handle your emotions of the greatness of that occasion of playing for the grand slam title”.
“He has one of the best serves in tennis”, the world number two told Sky Sports. BBC tennis commentators Andrew Castle and John Lloyd provide a few pointers.
Last year, Djokovic fell short of completing a Grand Slam calendar after suffering an upset over Swiss Stan Wawrinka in the final round of the French Open.
But the world number two is not concerned by the history between the pair.
“It doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past”.
“Novak loves playing on this court”.
But Murray was not the one who ended up with a code violation Friday for breaking his racket with two hammer blows of frustration on the blue hard court.
“There has been a lot of talks about his second serve, and I’m sure he and his team are very much aware of that”, Djokovic said.
But he was upbeat and confident, even though Djokovic is in the form of his life and coming off an impressive win in four sets over Federer in the first semi-final the night before.
“I have a very good shot if I play my best tennis”, he said.
“Five finals is a great achievement”.
The odds seem stacked against Murray.
‘I have a tremendous respect and admiration for everything he’s achieved in his career. “Obviously when you get to the final you’re disappointed if you don’t win”. The men’s final of the Australian Open, scheduled for 7:30pm this Sunday (31 January) in Melbourne may be a good preview of what Rio 2016 will offer in August.
“This will come down to his coach Amelie Mauresmo”, said Lloyd.
Djokovic, victor of three Grand Slam tournaments in 2015, is No. 1 in world rankings.
“Draw on the positives, you’ve beaten him before and you can do it again”.
Murray is confident he has the right strategy and skills to defeat Djokovic. I have to just believe in myself, have a solid game plan, and hopefully execute it and play well. Though Djokovic has won 10 of their last 11 matches, Murray did get a victory in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal in August. Williams won 7-6 (1), 6-3 despite Kerber winning five straight games to go up 5-1 and serving for the first set at 5-2. Vesnina and Soares will play American Coco Vandeweghe and Horia Tecau of Romania in Sunday’s final.
“I think someone like Novak is well on his way trying to accomplish that [Calendar Grand Slam]”, Laver said, reports the ABC. Murray, however, is one of the game’s most resilient competitors and when his chance came with Raonic’s injury he took it. Reaching the final is quite an achievement for the Scot given the on-court challenges he has faced here with the dramatic collapse of his father-in-law Nigel Sears and the knowledge that his wife back home is expecting their first child next month. No one really does expect him to win so I think he’ll go out there with a fun, relaxed attitude.
