Andy Murray surprised by Brexit, says time to unite
The new Wimbledon champion was later taken aback when the BBC’s Sue Barker put it to him that he might have to dust off his dancing shoes for the champions’ dinner after Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams re-introduced the tradition previous year. And it was telling that while Raonic delivered the joint-second fastest serve in Wimbledon history on Sunday, coming in at 147mph, Murray not only returned it but also went on to win the point. “I’d rather set the bar as high as possible and not quite achieve it. It’s better to try to finish number one in the world and finish at two”.
“I would love to get to number one, for sure, and the way to do that is to show up every week and be focused on that event”, Murray told British media. “And because he’s worked with him before, it was easy for him to jump back in and just go, ‘I know exactly what you have to do to win a Slam'”.
“I’ve had some great moments here, but also some tough losses”.
Murray’s triumph at SW19 gave him his third Grand Slam title overall and continues what has been an excellent year for him so far after reaching the finals of both the Australian Open and French Open, albeit he lost to Novak Djokovic on both occasions. But, even if I don’t play, I’m still probably going to go anyway, just to be there with the team.
“I think I did the best I could, I tried to put the things together”. It’s been a phenomenal two weeks.
Murray said he was looking forward to defending the Olympic title he won at the London 2012 Games, when the Rio tournament gets under way on August 6. “I’m going to make sure I do everything I can to be back here for another chance”, he said. “I feel happier this time, more content. I feel like this was sort of more for myself more than anything, and my team as well”, said Murray.
“I don’t see that being an issue this time”.
Winning Wimbledon once is tough enough, winning it twice with all the pressure that comes with being a British tennis player makes Andy Murray very special indeed.
Murray delivered a supreme display against Raonic, overcoming the Canadian No6 seed 6-4, 7-6, 7-6.
“I just want to keep try and keep winning more if I can”.
And, asked on Monday morning if he would be playing next week, he said: “I spoke to (GB captain) Leon (Smith) last night at the ball briefly. I’m proud for having my hand on the trophy again”.
“I do think he’s a leader”, said Murray.
“I say without hesitation that Murray is the best player of all time who has never been world No 1 and, he has never been as close to being the best player in the world”.
