Andy Murray to play brother Jamie in Montreal
This week’s Montreal Masters will be the first outing since Wimbledon for a number of the top players, whose need for time on the court is reflected in a remarkable line-up in the doubles competition. The Murrays, who played together in Britain’s Davis Cup victory over France last month, have never played against each other on the main tour.
The Serb has got a bye in the first round and will face either Thomaz Bellucci or Pablo Cuevas in the second round.
Tomas Berdych or Kevin Anderson could face Djokovic in the quarterfinals. With wins in Rome, Monte Carlo and Miami, Djokovic has gained 5 of his final six tournaments.
“Playing in the second round of the doubles is a little bit more relaxed than those occasions, but it still won’t be easy”. In 2007, it was one of my biggest wins. But Djokovic has had Murray’s number on hard court, going 16-6 against the Brit on the surface, including a win in the 2015 Australian Open final. Fatigue could play a part as Isner tries to go deep in Montreal. But even that didn’t help the two doubles veterans as they lost their first four matches – all on the claycourts of Europe. He will meet the victor of what promises to be a serving duel between 6-foot-11 Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and 6-foot-8 Jerzy Janowicz of Poland. Raonic finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2013 here and is still looking for his first Masters 1000 title.
For almost three months, Djokovic has stayed away from singles play outside of the Grand Slam tournaments.
Nadal will play against Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second-round of Montreal event. His third round opponent could be Gilles Simon or Viktor Troicki. He’s back in action at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal, taking the court for the first time since he defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon on July 12. While he fell hard at Citi Open, Andy Murray will surely be revived by this baby news! At the US Open, though, the eight-time Grand Slam doubles victor is likely to team up with Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
Jo-Wilfrid Tsonga is the defending champion, but he’s the 10th seed.
