Andy Murray wins second Wimbledon title
WIMBLEDON champ Andy Murray is out to nick Novak Djokovic’s world No 1 spot.
‘Everyone’s time comes at different stages.
“I think the last three months, since Monte-Carlo, have been some of the best I’ve played in terms of consistency”.
He will not play in the Davis Cup tie against Britain later this week, with Murray also expected not to feature, although he has suggested he will be in Belgrade to cheer on the team. Playing in a Wimbledon final is tough but I wouldn’t want to be prime minister.
“The only thing I could ever regret is if I didn’t do everything I can to make myself return to this position again”, Raonic said, reports the ATP’s official website.
Andy Murray defeated Milos Raonic to win his second Wimbledon title on Sunday. I’m going to call him after this, ‘ Murray told the BBC on Monday.
“I’d love to get to No1, obviously, but I think a lot of people are forgetting what Novak’s done because he lost in the third round here”.
Murray’s primary goal moving forward will be to win more slam titles and, having reached three successive finals, he is hoping to keep his good run going. His main focus, though, is on transitioning to hard court play ahead of the Olympics and the US Open in a bid to add to his haul of major titles and accrue the requisite points to supplant Novak Djokovic as World no 1. “I’d rather set the bar as high as possible and not quite achieve it”.
“The day or so afterwards, I was really emotional”.
“When I won Wimbledon before I was motivated exclusively really by the Slams”.
“So if I am going to win a few slams over the next few years, I am going to have to get better. I know he will come back strong from this because of the player he is”.
Crucially, Lendl returned to Murray’s side last month and the British No 1, who has won all 12 of his matches since then, paid tribute to the contribution of the man who also oversaw his previous major victories.
It is clear the reunion with his coach Ivan Lendl a few weeks ago, after a separation of more than two years, has had a lot to do with his shift in ambition.
I obviously would have loved to have won more.
He said: “After Wimbledon the last time, the few months afterwards, motivation was hard”.
“I say without hesitation that Murray is the best player of all time who has never been world No 1 and, he has never been as close to being the best player in the world”.
