Previous winners of TIME’s Person of the Year are the healthcare workers fighting Ebola in Africa (2014), Pope Francis (2013), US President Barack Obama (2012).
Just a year ago, Merkel basked in her unchallenged power at a CDU congress in Cologne, winning re-election as its chief with a whopping 97 percent in what she called an “overwhelming vote of confidence”.
Although all deserving of commendation, Angela’s presence in politics has meant a great deal to many women and morevoer, her supporters unanimously agree that she has helped keep peace in a particularly unsettled year.
Before he began, Davidson said he read a lot about Merkel, who has been announced as TIME magazine’s Person of the Year. From being a leading figure in matters concerning Syrian refugees and handling the Greek debt crisis, Merkel has shown true solidarity and good politics.
Trump took to Twitter to disapprove of the magazine’s choice for the person of the year, saying, “I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favourite”. But her stunning ascent from communist East Germany defies political convention. Germany would bail Greece out, on her strict terms. “Leaders are tested only when people don’t want to follow”.
The German leader beat out US Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, Russian Presdient Vladimir Putin and the leader of terror group Islamic State for the honour.
Following them were Kanye West, the omnipresent rapper who has declared his aspirations to run for president, and then, in a sign of Facebook’s Spanish-language presence, the reggaeton artist Nicky Jam.
The Sueddeutsche Zeitung said Merkel’s speech to the congress on Monday would be “one of the most important of her career”.
