Angelina Jolie: Argument scenes with Brad Pitt were tough
But Angelina, who wrote and directed the film as well as acting in it, revealed: “It was hardest [when] I was directing our fight scenes”.
“By the Sea“, which is set in France during the mid-1970s, is about a struggling marriage between a former dancer, Vanessa (Jolie) and a writer, Roland (Pitt).
The pair became engaged in 2012 after seven years together, and Wednesday just 11 months ago.
The Unbroken director explained that working with her 51-year-old husband in such an intense way brought them closer together as a couple.
Brad Pitt is NOT “flipping out” over Angelina Jolie taking their taking their kids to “unsafe” countries for her humanitarian work, despite a new tabloid report.
“It focuses on three couples, all at different stages in their lives”, Angelina said. “And at its center are the questions of what happened to Roland and Vanessa and why they are in the place they are now”.
“I’d be directing myself and him in a scene where we’re having a fight, and I’d be pulling out the parts [of him] that have an aggression toward me or when you’re frustrated with each other-it was very heavy”, Jolie said in an interview with the DGA.
“By The Sea” has given Gozo a great deal of global media exposure, which augurs well for the film and tourism industry on the island.
Though their friends thought they were insane for making this kind of film, Jolie said that it is “an art film, the kind of movie that I like to see but not something I’m usually cast in”, cited Vanity Fair. She further told the publication that she loves being a director more than an actor and was really surprised to make this discovery about her.
By the Sea hits theaters November. 13. “I don’t love being in the hair and makeup chair”, adding that she is “much happier directing”. “We got to push each other and be artists together, not in some big shiny film but in something very grass roots and emotional”.
