Angels likely losing C.J. Wilson
He told reporters he will be able to pitch effectively next year after undergoing surgery. “I’ve thrown 100 innings in this condition, and it’s just consistently getting worse”. Barring a different opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache or Dr. James Andrews, Wilson said he will require surgery and miss the rest of the season.
Wilson is 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA this season for the Angels. He also said that a few of last year’s struggles were because he was pitching through an ankle issue. If Wilson continued to pitch, he might put himself at greater risk of a shoulder injury.
Wilson, 34, had fluid drained from his elbow in late April.
The Angels promoted right-hander Drew Rucinski from Triple-A Salt Lake Friday but Scioscia would not say who will start Sunday when Wilson’s turn in the rotation comes up again.
Wilson has dealt with bone spurs for much of his career. However, surgery such as his is likely to end his 2015 season.
In July, Wilson had a 4.25 ERA, including a loss on Tuesday when he gave up six runs in four innings. There is no clear timetable for his return from the disabled list at the moment. “The sun’s going to come up tomorrow and we’ve got a brand-new game”.
“When it’s not manageable for a player and he can’t execute his pitches, you obviously have to take a step back”.
Wilson said he let interim general manager Bill Stoneman know this week, prior to the trade deadline, that his elbow was getting worse.
“I think our rotation is still going to be intact”, Scioscia said.
